The impact of longer school days

In many countries, and even in the UK’s independent sector, the school day is longer than that experienced by many of the UK’s children. One of the plans announced in Mr Osborne’s budget, in addition to the increasing academisation of schools in England, is a longer school day, ostensibly for additional extra-curricular activities. What are the strengths and weaknesses of this idea?
