Building writing skills

One of the skills my own children are learning in their English lessons at primary school at the moment is the use of "connectives" in their writing, rather than simply writing a string of short sentences. It makes their writing more interesting, and "looks" more academic once completed. Quality of written communication, or QWC, is important in the assessment criteria of external exams at secondary school too, but remains an area that many students still fall down on despite understanding the subject material. Here are some thoughts on how to develop the "connectives" skills in writing in your own students:
