The Criminal Justice System relies very heavily on the testimony of witnesses. Of course, sometimes witnesses might be very reluctant to come forward and testify in court because of fears for their own safety. For this reason processes exist whereby witnesses can be officially protected so that they cannot be intimidated or attacked. In extreme cases this could involve people getting entirely new identities or being rehoused for extended periods of time.
