Welfare State
The welfare state was created based on the findings of the Beveridge report of 1942 which identified the ‘5 giant evils’ in society (Squalor, ignorance, want, idleness and disease). The welfare state provides material and economic support to individuals in need based on their individual requirements. This can be done by giving individuals support when unemployed, on maternity leave and housing when needed. As a result the following laws have been passed to help create and shape the welfare state National Assistance Act (1948) and National Insurance Act (1946).
