Ideology (Theory)
Ideology is a term that has a number of different meanings. Its most common meaning is a broadly coherent set of ideas, often associated with a particular political perspective (e.g. socialism or conservatism). The term also means the science of ideas. However, Marxists use the term somewhat different from either of these dictionary definitions, to mean a set of ideas that are produced in order to justify the social and economic conditions that exist in society. They particularly refer to the dominant ideology, a concept developed further by Gramsci in his idea of hegemony.
