False Class Consciousness (Beliefs)
Marxism sees religion as a form of social control as it creates false class consciousness. This allows for the proletariat to be exploited by creating mistaken beliefs about the nature of social life which justifies the position of the bourgeoisie. For example; the Hindu caste system in India is used to legitimate a social hierarchy and position based on degree of religious purity this would act as false class consciousness as individual in lower castes would be encouraged to accept their position as divinely appointed based on their religious impurity.
