Eleven Plus (11+)
The 1944 Education Act introduced academic selection where pupils sat an exam at age eleven – known as the 11+ - which would determine which school they should attend. Traditionally the test would include English and Maths as well as verbal and non-verbal reasoning. It aimed to test intelligence and pupils' results would determine whether they attended a grammar school, secondary modern school or a technical school. Today, the 11+ remains in areas that still have selective grammar schools.
