Compensatory Education
It has been noted that there is an achievement gap between middle-class and working-class pupils and that this gap is even evident before formal school begins. As such, out-of-school factors must be at play. Some policy-makers have looked at ways in which education policy can compensate for material or cultural deprivation. A good example is the development of SureStart centres by the Labour government after 1997 and also the implementation of the pupil premium, a Liberal Democrat policy, by coalition government between 2010 and 2015.
