What are Covid-status certificates and how might they work?

As the UK emerges from a national lockdown, the government have proposed the use of a covid certificate (or passport) to enable people to participate in 'higher-risk' activities, such as attending sports events or go to a concert.
There have been some criticisms from other members of the government and between political parties about the use of these, and how justified they are.
This article and this podcast could be used as part of a discussion about the passports as well as the data that is likely to be kept about individuals from these.
