Suicide and the Modern Middle-Aged Male
27th September 2012
A somewhat worrying report here in the Telegraph which focuses attention on the relatively high rates of suicide among middle-aged men, particularly the poor.
According to a report featured in the article, "Family breakdown, improved rights for women and the collapse of traditional male-dominated industries have combined to create a crisis of “masculine identity”.
Some startling statistics are reported, including:
Men aged between 35 and 55 are more than four times as likely to take their own lives as women of the same age
Middle aged men from poor areas are up to 10 times more likely to commit suicide than other groups of people
