SCLY1 Families and Households Revision
25th October 2012
Families and Households assessment consists of a 1hr exam, answering 3 short questions and 2 24 mark essay questions.
This unit can be split into 7 topics, all of which of course have links with one another:
· Demography
· Functions of the Family
· Couples and the Domestic Division of Labour
· Family Diversity
· Childhood
· Social Policy
· Marriage, Divorce and Cohabitation
The way I use these in class is to give each learner a copy of the mind map on A3, then split them into groups giving them various different elements of each topic, for example for functions of the family each group may take a different theory, with time constraints each group has to remember everything they can, using the prompts on the mind maps to ‘fill in the gaps’ they also use post its for extra notes. Afterwards 2 members of each group may move round in a ‘carousel’ sharing their responses until they have a full mind map, I often use music as a timer for this or ring a bell when they need to move round. I then use Q+A to check their notes are correct. In small classes learners can be split up into pairs and ‘speed date.’
Each aspect of the mind map tend to move in the order that the essay should be written (going clockwise) so these mind maps can also be adapted to fit around past essay questions, with each ‘prompt’ being a point to make in the essay. Of course there's much more material within the unit than simply the prompts within these mind maps, however they do help to summarise each topic and I have found my learners really like them, they remember, for example, functionalism is at 12 o’clock! Both myself and the learners feel they tend to be more effective than just asking them to ‘complete a revision mind map.’
