Quote for the Week
9th October 2009
I thought I’d do a quote for the week (rather than ‘of the week’ since its historical). Also there’s another quiz on the way soon - just waiting for colleagues to post it up.
So meanwhile…. here’s the quote….
“The culture industry perpetually cheats its consumers of what it perpetually promises….The culture industry does not sublimate; it represses.”
Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, Dialectic of Enlightenment.
Whoa! Hold on there! Yes, I know what you’re thinking - very hard, what on earth’s this about, bit heavy for A level sociology.
But hang on - with a little bit of vocab busting, I’m sure A level sociology students can learn quite a bit from this. Does the culture industry - the music business, publishers, the media - repress us? What would that mean? Can you think of any ways in which you (or others) might be ‘repressed’ - put down might be one translation - by the culture industry?
Have a go. It’s worth thinking about and it’s quite a radical thought.
