News Values and the G20

Jim Riley

6th April 2009

Go for the Sensational Peter Wilby in The Guardian today, has a nice little observation on news values.

Wilby observes that that for journalists, scare stories about the G20 ‘riots’ were a win-win. If terrible things happened, they were ahead of the story. If not, they could pronounce revolution a flop and celebrate the heroism of the boys in blue.

That says a lot about news values and the way that news is in fact produced, rather than being simply a factual record of what happens.

What other news values shape the way the news is produced?
