Myths about Inequality
10th May 2010
I missed this a couple of weeks ago, but its worth checking out and it shows that you don’t have to be called ‘sociologist’ to do sociology. Radio 4’s Thinking Allowed a couple of weeks ago featured geographer Danny Dorling of the University of Sheffield arguing that inequality in the rich world is perpetuated by five ingrained beliefs: elitism is efficient; exclusion is necessary; prejudice is natural; greed is good; despair is inevitable. His social research argues that those beliefs are nothing more than myths. More revision materials on the way soon.
