Gender and Education - Again

Jim Riley

8th June 2009

More today - from yesterday’s news - on gender and education. This BBC package goes into more depth and gets a cross-section of views from students. But interestingly, there’s an admission from the director of the Higher Education Policy Institute, that no one really knows for sure why men maintain a narrow lead in first class degrees. Well, perhaps it’s rather pointless trying to explain such a relatively small difference - sociology is after all - often concerned with explaining the broad social trends. But all this stuff should be food for thought for sociology AS students who will soon be thinking about coursework. Media reports like this are a good way of starting to generate ideas and think around topics. But don’t go for the first thing you think or see; mull it over.

For some it may be a bit early to be thinking of coursework - but many schools and colleges start AS students off on it once the AS exams are over. So, whether you’re soon to be setting off down that path, or leaving until after the summer, just take a few minutes to check over this report or look around the press for a few more possibilities and file them for use later on.

I will in due course post up a few ideas on coursework.
