Education and Social Mobility in the UK - Lots of Change & Investment, but Little Effect

Jim Riley

22nd August 2017

A useful summary of an upcoming Sociology lecture here from Dr John Goldthorpe is useful for learning more about the impact of education on social mobility.

Goldthorpe argues that decades of educational expansion and reform have had little effect on social mobility.

He suggests that for education policy to have an impact on social mobility there needs to have been movement towards an education-based meritocracy.

However, Goldthorpe sees little evidence of any such movement, despite decades of constant educational change and investment.
