Crime and Deviance: Victimisation of Criminals and the Criminal Justice System

Patterns of victimisation vary by gender, class and ethnicity but a recent murder case highlights the relationship between a female victim and a male perpetrator. Females are more likely to be assaulted or murdered by a partner or ex-partner than males.

The horrific murder of Shana Grice also identifies some of the flaws within the criminal justice system. Shana Grice had spoken to the police six months prior to her murder raising concerns about her ex-boyfriend's behaviour. She reported that Michael Lane had been stalking her however, she was fined for wasting police time.

The case is still at trial and Michael Lane denies her murder.
