I had wondered if the media, in its usual, attention-deficit way, was ever going to let us know ‘what happened next’ in the case of Caster Semenya. How could I have been so cynical? This incident - and the whole issue really - certainly goes to show how socially constructed gender identity is - just witness the acres of print and masses of discussion and explanation required to define what constitutes ‘male’ or ‘female’ and indeed, that most social of categories, ‘normal’.
