Back to the 70s?

Jim Riley

High youth unemployment? Sounds like the 70s again. Of course, some things have changed; but the same old questions seem to come around again and again. Why do so many young people fail to get qualifications or jobs? Is it, to paraphrase the words of Dan Finn, that they are unemployable, or simply that there are no jobs? Or think of the title of Paul Willis’s book - ” Learning to Labour: Why working class kids get working class jobs” - is it now the case that more and more young people are ‘learning not to labour’. It all seems depressingly familiar. Whatever next - will people start ‘rediscovering’ social class?

In the meantime, here’s the BBC link - and yes, this is yet another topic which, with careful tailoring, you could adapt to the framework of A2 coursework.
