Variable Reinforcement
A variable reinforcement schedule is a type of partial reinforcement where only a proportion of responses are reinforced and there is no fixed pattern. Gambling machines use variable reinforcement, as a win comes after an unpredictable number of responses. It is this unpredictability that often results in continued gambling.
