Physical Dependence
Physical dependence occurs with the long-term use of many drugs, such as nicotine, heroin and anti-anxiety drugs. If a person is physically dependent on a drug it means that they need to take it in order to feel ‘normal’. Physical dependence can be demonstrated by the person showing withdrawal symptoms if they stop taking the drug, and is also often accompanied by tolerance (needing an increased dose in order to feel the same effect).
