Internalisation: Gender

Internalisation occurs when a person accepts the attitudes or behaviour of another person. This is an important part of Freud’s psychodynamic explanation of gender development; the Oedipus complex is resolved when a boy identifies with his father and then internalises his father’s gender identity. Similarly, the Electra complex is resolved when a girl identifies with her mother and internalises her mother’s gender identity.
