Suggested Answer: Memory studies are criticised for being unrealistic because they often take place in laboratory settings and because the stimuli used (e.g. recalling trigrams, words, etc.) are often artificial.
One way to over the first issue is to conduct the research in a real-world setting (e.g. by using a field study or natural study). This would make the setting more realistic and therefore improve the ecological validity of the research.
One way to overcome the second issue is to make the stimuli more meaningful. For example, rather than using meaningless tasks (e.g. recalling trigrams) researchers could select material that people have a desire to remember (e.g. psychological facts/theories for an A-Level exam!) as this would be more meaningful.
