Suggested Answer: One issue with Bowlby’s theory of maternal deprivation comes research evidence. For example, Barrett (1997) conducted a review of the literature and found that securely attachment children respond to emotional disruption/deprivation more positively than insecurely attached children. This matters because it suggests that there are individual differences in relation to maternal deprivation and that maternal deprivation is more problematic for insecurely attached children in comparison to securely attached children. This suggests that Bowlby’s theory does generalise equally to all children and there are different outcomes depending on the nature/type of attachment.
