An outline of some of the resources provided to all WOW! Psychology 2015 delegates is provided below.
AO2 Burger
This is a lesson resource to help students to develop their explanation and use evidence and theory effectively to gain AO1 and AO2 marks in essays.
Ask the Adults
This resource works well for combining both the Attachments and Research methods topic. It allows students to test a theory (to some extent) using a readily accessible target population and is a chance to run a practical for the attachments topic (on which is difficult to base practicals).
Be the Researcher!
This is an opportunity for students to conduct and write up their own detailed research project in pairs or threes. This activity really brings the subject alive, enabling less academic students to get involved in practical work and providing an opportunity to stretch students willing to learn about research findings in detail.
Dear Psycho Aunt/Uncle
This is a plenary activity that can be used to test the knowledge of romantic relationship formation and maintenance theory.
Design-er Day Care
This resource focuses on the “attachment in everyday life” part of the AQA specification. By the time students have completed the rest of the attachment specification they should be ready to apply their knowledge to realistic situation.
Does Romance Breed Romance?
This provides an enjoyable opportunity for A2 students to use their knowledge to design and experiment. This version concerns ‘relationships’ but can be very easily adapted to any A2 topic.
Genderbread
This resource is a starter to introduce the students to the study of gender and gender stereotyping and can be used to refer back to throughout the topic.
Here’s My baby - Doh!
This activity links to the AS attachment section of the specification. The initial stage can be either a starter or a plenary towards the beginning of this section.
House, Person Tree
This activity can be used whilst teaching psychotherapy and therapeutic methods in the psychodynamic approach.
Hypothefish
This is a lesson resource to aid delivery of directional and non-directional hypotheses, one and two tailed tests as part of the statistics requirement for AQA Psychology.
Jackanory
This resource is a main activity that can be adapted to teach many areas of psychology it involves students completing individual research then using this to feedback to their group.
Levels of Data
This is a lesson resource to aid delivery of levels of data which is part of the statistics requirement for AQA Psychology.
Looking for Love
Students are often caught out by questions about content analysis in exams and will quickly forget details if simply taught the facts. This fun activity provides a ‘hands on’ approach. It is useful for the Relationships topic.
Medication Swap Shop
This activity can be used to teach biological therapy for depression - drugs. It can also be adapted for any topic option comparing drug therapies.
Random Connections
This activity is an excellent way to start a revision session. It can be done at the end of a topic. The end of both the first and the second year is a good time to introduce it as the students then have a good bank of knowledge to draw upon.
Schizophrenia Sort
Having studied the biological and psychological explanations for schizophrenia, this exercise helps students consolidate their knowledge. With other cards this method can be used for other psychopathology topics.
Thought Catching
This resource highlights how a cognitive behavioural therapist can alter negative thoughts to positive thoughts. It is an ideal way of applying knowledge of how CBT works to novel situations.
Whose Data is it Anyway?
This resource helps students to identify the differences between quantitative and qualitative data and also can then be used to develop evaluation of each type of data.
