Using mindfulness in the classroom...

It’s a bit of a buzzword...but is mindfulness it really that great? I was introduced to mindfulness last May when I took part in a MBSR (Mindfulness based stress reduction). For me it's been one of the best things I have taken part in.

Mindfulness as described by Jon Kabat Zinn:

“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and non judgmentally.”

The 8-week course was an eye opener into my own thought processes - I know, I know I'm a psychology teacher and I should already be aware of these - but like others it's do as I say not do as I do.

Sometimes it takes another to point out the obvious.

Meditation isn't for everyone and I wouldn't force it upon anyone. For me it's given clarity, and helped me to maintain focus on what is right here, right now. I have been fortunate enough to be able to pass on what I have learnt to my sixth form students who volunteered to take part. Uptake has been amazing and many students have found meditation a great help in managing their anxiety.

Over the coming weeks I will share some of the strategies I have used with my students.
