UCAS Psychology - Where Shall I Go?
15th July 2014
This is personal to you. There is no right answer and each of you will have differing priorities. Here is a quick questionnaire on all the major considerations for which university to apply to. Some may not be important you, but it should help you reflect on where you want to go.
Q1: Do you want to live at home? Answer: YES | NO
If yes, check on a map for all potential universities within commutable distance. If no, you can look further afield
Q2: Would you prefer to be, in a city or on a university campus? Answer: YES | NO
Some cities tend to be a little more expensive and the student residences may be spread out, but there is plenty to do on your doorstep!
Q3: Does the university compare favourably to others in the rankings? Answer: YES | NO
This will be discussed in more detail in the ‘How do I decide on a Psychology course?’ section, but you should consider the quality of the institution
Q4: Have previous students given a positive view of the university? Answer: YES | NO
This is a consideration, and you should speak to other students. However, your experience will be unique so this shouldn’t be the main focus.
Q5: Is it easily accessible by public transport from my home? Answer: YES | NO
If you are planning on going home regularly you need to consider how easy it will be to do it. Some universities may be close( ish) but the rail / bus links may be poor. Using public transport for an open day will soon let you know how easy it is!
Q6: Is it cheap to get to using public transport from my home? Answer: YES | NO
Again, as with number 5, think about how easy it will be to get home. If it is very expensive you might want to think again if that’s important to you.
Q7: Is accommodation within my budget in the first and subsequent years? Answer: YES | NO
Look carefully at the cost of both university and private accommodation. Will it be affordable?
Q8: Is the cost of living with your budget? Answer: YES | NO
Some cities, particularly London have a high cost of living. Do your research. Is it within your budget?
Q9: Have I attended an open day? Answer: YES | NO
This is important! You really ideally need to have attended an open day prior to choosing if possible. Use numbers 1-8 to help decide which ones to attend.
When asking current university students a variety of other considerations arose…for example, the nightlife, the sports facilities and the potential for spending time abroad in your second year… and so the list goes on. A simple list of pros and cons for each choice may help! Do your research! Think carefully about what is important to you. It is your decision.
