Psychology on the Box...week beginning 13th September
11th September 2014
Moral dilemmas figure highly this week on the box plus a couple of potential sources to help you resource the new specifications. Read on...
On BBC iPlayer there are a series of 30 minute dramas focusing on moral dilemmas. The series is called The Secrets and was shown on BBC1. It offers five potential sources for students to decide what they think should happen, and they should then compare their answer with Kohlberg's stages. It's good to have more up to date stimuli than the Hans dilemma for them to tackle.
On 4oD Stammer School gives some insight into the condition of stammering and the psychology underpinning it. This is a great recommendation for students to watch in their own time, particularly if they are looking into careers in speech and language therapy. Fascinating.
'Age-Gap Love' (Channel 5, Monday, 9pm) looks at examples of relationships that do not fit the norm, age-wise. This program looks at the relationship of a woman of 68 and her partner who is a 36 year old man. They met when he was 18. This is ideal for examining the validity of the evolutionary theory of sexual selection and will make a great talking point in class.
'ASBO and proud' ( Channel 5 Thursday 9pm) should also spark some lively discussion and is the perfect stimulus for testing how the approaches explain behaviour. Why do these people with ASBOs do what they do and which approach explains it the most convincingly? There's no right answer of course, but it is a great way to test the application skills of your students. It's noteworthy that this will be tested as a skill to a greater extent by the new spec too.
On Thursday ( BBC3, 9pm) 'Don't Drop the Baby' looks at the role of soon-to- be and new fathers. The addition of 'Multiple attachments and the role of the father' in the Attachments topic on the new spec means that, if you're sticking with AQA, you're going to need to resource that part of the specification. Don't forget to record it, it will come in handy!
