Psychology on the Box ...week begining the 1st November
30th October 2014
We have had a look for potential resources on the TV net week, and, although there is still a criminal psychology bias, there are some interesting documentaries
On Sunday 2nd at 9pm on BBC4 there is a programme which is of particular use to you if you teach the anomalistic psychology topic on AQA A2. It's called Exposed: Magicians, Psychics and Frauds. This documentary looks at the work of Dr James Randi who spends his working life investigating people who claim to be magic or psychic. The inevitable cold reading techniques will be covered and frauds exposed!
On Wednesday there is a documentary on Broadmoor, the hospital that houses some of the most notorious killers of all time ( ITV 9pm). The people inside are interviewed and the programme, even if you're not teaching forensic psychology this year, promises to be fascinating. It may be one to recommend to your students, but maybe watch it first and then direct them to itv player? It probably is not going to be to a comfortable watch.
On Thursday, sticking with the forensic theme there is a documentary on Fred and Rose West. It's called When Fred met Rose and is on channel 5 at 10 pm. Again, this will be of interest, but may be unpleasant. The fact that it goes into he childhoods of both Fred and Rose West may be a useful resource to discuss the reason why the became killers. Criminal psychologists are also interviewed for their angle on the pair.
Perhaps those budding forensic psychologists you are teaching could be pointed to the programmes? It could give them some insight into the career they are heading towards?
