IB Psychology: Teaching the Human Relationships option? How about using the example of bullying?

Laura Swash

12th September 2016

While many teachers use the domestic violence option to teach about the sociocultural origins of violence, the effects of violence and how to reduce violence, it is possible to use the example of bullying to meet these same learning outcomes.

What’s more using bullying in this way opens up the discussion about it in class legitimately and without pressure. The excellent Bullying UK site can stimulate debate within the class, and has plenty of ideas to launch your lessons.

While this is introductory material, discussing the causes of violence is linked to the sociocultural origin of violence and this debate can be followed up by sharing academic articles, such as can be found in the references of Dan Olweus’ seminal work on bullying at school.

Olweus explores the causes of, effects of and how to reduce bullying in school. Most of all, the references section of his work is most useful for this aspect of human relationships.
