Yet another potential stumbling block for unit 1…ensure it’s not you who does this question wrong! This one is surprisingly poorly done. It’s as though students put all their efforts into the Multi Store Model and overlook this one but this is just as likely to be asked about…The working memory model, including its strengths and limitations

This blog won’t cover the model in detail…I am sure you have plenty of notes / books on that. However when you’re revising this one make sure you…

  • 1) Can write about each component and understand its role in the model
  • 2) Know of ways that the slave systems ( the visuospatial sketch pad and the phonological loop) can be tested. Have a task ready for each. For example you might use the idea of someone counting the number of windows in their house in their head to test the visuo spatial sketchpad. This has been asked about on previous questions.
  • 3) Don’t forget the episodic buffer! It was a late addition, but is still part of the model.
  • 4) Have at least 3 evaluation points that you can fully explain and try to learn ones that have support from research

Finally, a classic mistake, and a really bad one, is to outline the wrong model of memory. Stop yourself and check if one is asked about on the exam. They have been confused by many students over the years… don’t let it be you!
