Hot Spot number 10
18th May 2014
Is it possible to know too much? I don’t think so, but this hot spot is a note of warning....If you have to outline an approach you need to be able to do so in an efficient way. If there is a 12 mark question on one of the approaches to explaining abnormality then you could easily spend too long outlining the approach and leave little time for evaluation.A good plan is to pick three key features of each approach and decide which aspects of these key features you will talk about in detail. For example, if you are outlining the Psychodynamic approach you may outline the three key features of 1) the id/ego/superego 2) the psychosexual stages and 3) the ego defence mechanisms. However, if you describe each of the psychosexual stages in detail your time will be swallowed up. Name all of them and pick one to talk about in more detail. Same for the defence mechanisms… name some but outline only one in detail.Spend some time today looking at all four approaches and prioritising which ones you will describe in an outline of the approach. It’ll make your answer ( if the question comes up) on Tuesday super efficient!
