An emotional attachment to a nation. Due to the greater movement of people throughout the world the whole issue of national identity has become more complex. The extent to which members of society feel an emotional attachment towards their nation has a major impact upon the degree of social cohesion. Attempts to generate a feeling of national identity include the use of national symbols and an emphasis upon citizenship.
