Failed state
A state in which there are no political institutions that claim sovereignty within that territory. Failed states can often provide a haven for terrorist organisations and other extremist groups, particularly those shaped by religious fundamentalism (e.g. the Taliban in Afghanistan). As such, the ‘West’ may increasingly rely upon liberal interventionism to prevent the spread of fundamentalist beliefs within those states.
