Here is a fascinating approach to visualising the voting preferences expressed at the ballot box in the UK General Election of 2010…

You may have seen many maps which colour each constituency based on the party of the winning candidate. But here is one which perhaps better reflects the mix of votes cast in each constituency. The proportion of votes for each party is translated into a colour whose precise shade is determined by the percentage of the ballot. Great for displaying on the whiteboard or printing out and asking students to make observations on the key features.
