Select Committees in the Spotlight

Jim Riley

16th February 2009

I have just sent a link to this post from the Guardian’s Politics blog (Select Committees in the Spotlight) through to my AS classes, who have been just looking at the scrutiny function of Parliament.

I’ve always been slightly sceptical about the power of select committes, especially when compared to their better respected and resourced counter-parts across the Atlantic. However, the recent flurry of ‘big names’ questioned (Boris Johnson, BBC’s Robert Peston, the bankers etc) has made them headline news. Whether or not you think select committees are worth it, hopefully A-level Politics students will be able to gain a wealth of those all important examples to back up their points in the summer exams.
