Democracy for Sale: Dark Money and Dirty Politics, by Peter Geoghegan
I often get asked by students of Politics if I have any book recommendations. I do, and I have listed them in a previous posting here: https://www.tutor2u.net/politi...
And I would add Geoghegan's to the list. You don't have to believe in conspiracy theories about a global power elite of lizards and such like to feel that something might be rotten at the heart of British democracy. Well, I've had this sitting on my bookshelf since late last summer, and over the half term week, during the two hours a day I've been sitting in a hyperbaric chamber in Hull (don't ask), I've become much more worried about what can only be described as a dark side to how politics operates in this country.
Its focus is on the insidious and often inter-connecting forces of money, the internet and globalisation. I did have some reservations about the writing style (superfluous descriptions on an individual's character or lifestyle were over-wrought), but this was more than counter-balanced by the sheer depth of investigative detail.
If this wasn't a sufficient endorsement, see this review from a newspaper: https://www.theguardian.com/bo...
Amazon (where it gets 4.5, by the way) link to the title is here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Democ...
Note, however, that other booksellers are available.
