Impact of Lowering the Voting Age to 16
14th July 2017
The size and shape of the UK electorate has not changed markedly since 1969 when the voting age was cut from 21 to 18. What effect on individual constituencies might happen if the voting age is lowered to 16?
This ONS data special looks at the evidence of the impact of reducing the voting age to 16. It finds that, drawing on the results from the June 2017 General Election, overall there were 88 Parliamentary constituencies where the number of 16- and 17-year-olds was greater than the winning margin.
