Helping hand - my top 5 American politics columnists

Jim Riley

14th March 2008

Earlier this week, I provided a list of my top 5 UK politics columnists. Who do I turn to when I want the best comment on American politics?

Lexington
Friday wouldn’t be Friday without this weekly column – named, of course, after the location of a key battle during the American Revolution.

Andrew Sullivan
The American based Englishman offers regularly churns out fantastically incisive articles on the American political scene in the Sunday Times.

David Broder
This Pulitzer Prize winner is seen by many as the ‘Dean’ of the Washington press corps

E. J. Dionne Jr
This commentator and op-ed writer is the second of my selections from the Washington Post.

With both Broder and Dionne I sometimes print out about a week’s worth of their articles and read them at the weekend. Not very environmentally friendly, but I suspect readers, like me, don’t have time to sit down every morning and browse the US websites for half an hour with their croissants and coffee.

Maureen Dowd
Another Pulitzer Prize winner, this Washington DC native’s columns in the New York Times often stir a fair degree of controversy.
