Who or what is Islamic State? (Rachel Fairhead)

With their violent tactics – which have included mass killing, abductions, as well as the beheadings of soldiers and journalists. No one can have failed to have heard of Islamic State. The methods used by this ‘group’ have caused fear and outrage in equal measure throughout the world. It also should be noted that these militant fighters are widely known and reported as being called Isis.

The race to the White House starts here (Mike Simpson)

As eyes turn to the November mid-term elections which will have a large part to play in determining the fate of the rest of the Obama second term; another election is moving into view. Whilst the presidential election of 2016 remains two year distant; the main contenders are moving into position to launch their bids for the White House.

Collective Responsibility (Mike Simpson)

The recent resignation of Baroness Warsi is a good example of convention of collective responsibility. This convention determines that all members of the cabinet must not only:

1 not criticise government policy; but also that;

2 they must actively support it in public.

Ferguson, Missouri: “An old wound torn fresh” (Nick Graham)

This summer the small town of Ferguson just outside the city of St Louis became one more locality synonymous with racial tension in the United States. The killing of a black teenage boy by a police officer there sparked much more than weeks of protests that drew the President, the Attorney General and the National Guard into the fray.

The EU’s New Triumvirate (Julie Smith)

It’s been a big year for the EU! Elections in May saw Eurosceptics make gains in the European Parliament and three of the union’s top jobs came up for grabs. With a possible UK withdrawal on the cards, a stagnating European economy and ongoing crises in the Middle East and Ukraine, the new incumbents face some of the EU’s toughest challenges yet.

Cabinet Reshuffles- the Prime Minister’s Power to Hire and Fire?

The topic of cabinet reshuffles and the Prime Minister’s power to hire and fire government ministers featured on an AS exam paper in the summer examinations. The fact that this featured in the summer examinations shows that the theme is still a key topic for AS students of British politics
