Events, dear boy

3rd February 2009

A pointer towards a raft of events that will undoubtedly be of interest to teachers and/or students.

First up, notification of an excellent study tour opportunity in April for teachers from the European Atlantic Movement:

‘This is a study tour for Lecturers, Teachers, other Professional and Business People who are interested in visiting the institutions of Western Co-operation and discussing current affairs

The party will visit the European Parliament, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), the European Commission, the Council of the European Union among others. Briefings, Q & A sessions and opportunities to gather supportive literature will for part of every visit.

The cost including travel by Eurostar and 3 nights en suite accommodation with breakfast at the 4* Hotel Carrefour de l’Europe which is situated in the centre of Brussels.’

See the TEAM website for more details.

Mentioning Larry Sabato in a previous post reminds me of an event at the British Library next month:

‘Panel Discussion. The annual debate of the Academy of the Social Sciences. Prospects for the new U.S. administration.

Monday 9 March 2009

A transatlantic panel considers the question: ‘What can social science do for the new president of the USA?’ Professors George Edwards (Texas A&M University & Oxford), Andrew Rudalevige (Dickinson College), Rob Singh (London), Dilys Hill (Southampton) and Jenel Virden (Hull) will introduce topics for discussion on the possible policies and actions the new presidential administration, just 50 days into its term of office.

The debate will be followed by a wine reception.

Presented by the Academy of the Social Sciences and the Eccles Centre for American Studies, the British Library, with the generous support of the ESRC as part of the 2009 Festival of Social Science.

See the Eccles Centre website for more details.

The preceding week sees the Institute for the Americas hold a one day conference, on 2 March 2009, on Bush’s presidency.

It may be short notice, but for Obama fans, there is an event on at the LSE this week:

‘Obama and the Empire of Liberty

Date: Thursday 5 February 2009
Time: 6.30-8pm
Venue: Hong Kong Theatre, Clement House
Speaker: Professor David Reynolds
Chair: Professor Arne Westad

A new president. A new era? David Reynolds will introduce the Obama presidency against the backdrop of America’s epic, tangled history.

David Reynolds is professor of international history at Cambridge University and a fellow of the British Academy. His most recent book is America, Empire of Liberty: A New History.’
