Brown examples

Jim Riley

22nd March 2008

There is a great little story in today’s Guardian which is a rich source of all important examples to support answers on two key topic areas: PM/Cabinet and political parties

Probably the biggest challenge facing politics students looking to get the best mark in the upcoming AS exams is finding relevant and recent examples to support the points they make.

Have a look at the story here and consider these questions below.

Who are the two special advisers in the Brown team who were given the job of taking the Cabinet’s temperature on public service reform?

Who did Brown appoint as director of strategy?

Do you think special advisers are as important in the Brown premiership as they were said to be under Blair? What does this say about the office of PM as presidency?

How much individual freedom have different Cabinet ministers exercised on public service reform?

Does this support the idea of the PM as all powerful?

What do these ideas about “anti Blair”, “post Blair” etc say about whether Labour has abandoned its traditional principles?

You may also wish to consider whether there are any policy differences between the Labour and Conservative parties on public services.
