AS Politics terminology exercise

Jim Riley

2nd October 2008

Edexcel are looking to reward students who use appropriate political vocabulary. In preparation I have conducted an exercise with my AS groups which is designed to check understanding of key terms

We have just finished looking at the ideas and policies of the main political parties and I desgned a worksheet to check what they understood key political terms to mean. I am not suggesting that these terms need to be explained at length during answers, but it is unlikely that they will be used correctly if students don’t have a general understanding of their importance in relation to the syllabus.

In about 30 minutes they worked through the following:

Monetarism

Triangulation

Privatisation

Authoritarianism

Eurosceptic/phobe

Socialism

Clause IV

Welfare state

Dependency culture

Third way

New Right

Consensus

It was quite useful and I’ll definitely conduct something similar with other topic areas as we progress through the year.
