Down's Syndrome

Down syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. It affects around 1 in 700 babies in the United States, and its effects can be wide-ranging.

Here are some common effects of Down syndrome:

  • Intellectual disability: People with Down syndrome often have mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, which can affect learning, communication, and social skills.
  • Physical differences: People with Down syndrome may have distinctive facial features, low muscle tone, and poor coordination. They may also be shorter and have a lower body weight than their peers.
  • Health issues: People with Down syndrome have an increased risk for certain medical conditions, such as heart defects, respiratory problems, and gastrointestinal issues.

Despite these challenges, many people with Down syndrome lead full and happy lives with the right support and opportunities.
