Degeneration
Degeneration describes the loss and deterioration of the cells of a tissue or organ. During later adulthood senses such as taste, touch, sight and hearing start to degenerate. For example, hearing loss gradually occurs during later adulthood because the small hair cells in the inner ear become damaged and do not regrow. These hair cells are needed to pick up sound waves and change to signals that can be understood by the brain as sounds.
