Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a genetic disorder characterised by gradual muscle deterioration and weakness.
Duchenne muscular dystrophy is caused by the lack of the protein called dystrophin which keeps the cells of muscles together.
A third of all cases start in the womb, without any warning signs.
Effects of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
- Progressive weakness of skeletal muscles
- Delayed ability to sit and walk
- Difficulties in learning to speak
Symptoms of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
- Difficulty in standing
- Walking on the balls of the feet or the toes
- Difficulty with climbing such as steps or stairs
- More prone to falls
- Muscle pain
- Unfortunately, most people die from this by their late twenties.
