Cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition, which means that you are born with it. People with cystic fibrosis have a build-up of thick mucus, mainly in the lungs as well as the digestive system and other organs. In the UK there are over 10,500 people living with cystic fibrosis.
Effects of Cystic Fibrosis
- Cystic fibrosis related diabetes
- Infections
- Fertility problems
Symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis
- Infection to the lungs
- Problems with the digestive system that can lead to obstruction to the bowel
- Liver disease due to blockage to small ducts within the liver
- Bone will become thinner and also weaker especially in younger people
- Additional symptoms such as kidney dysfunction and nasal polyps
