Job Profile: Phlebotomist

The primary role of a phlebotomist, is to take blood samples.

They must do this safely, without causing harm or distress to the patient, and effectively, so that the blood sample reaches the laboratory without contamination.

Blood samples are used for variety of purposes:

  • To test how well organs and organ systems are working
  • To test for illness and disease
  • To confirm (or rule out) a diagnosis
  • To check how well a medication is working
  • To check whether a medication dosage needs to be changed

Therefore, phlebotomists are a vital part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Where do phlebotomists work?

Phlebotomists work wherever blood samples are taken. Including:

  • Hospital wards/inpatient settings
  • Outpatient clinics
  • GP surgeries

What skills do phlebotomists need?

  • Compassion and kindness
  • Dexterity - this is a hands-on role
  • To be able to put patients at ease - they might feel anxious about giving blood
  • Attention to detail when following instructions and procedures
  • Teamwork
  • Initiative
  • Excellent communication skills to explain procedures to patients
