Press Act (1966)

Devised by Minister for Information, Manuel Fraga, the Press Act resulted in the partial liberalisation of the Spanish press. Censorship of newspaper publications was lifted meaning the press became self-regulating and owners of newspapers could pick their own editors rather than being appointed by the state. This did not make the Spanish press completely free - any journalist thought to be hostile to the Franco regime could still be sacked by the government.
