Popular Front
A left-wing electoral alliance consisting of socialists, liberals and communists, formed in January 1936 to contest the February elections a month later. The Popular Front was largely the work of Manuel Azana who sought to unite the left to prevent the possibility of a fascist dictatorship advocated by leading figures on the Spanish right. The Popular Front went on to win the February 1936 elections, winning 267 seats in the Cortes.
